If Lesley Manville's Oscar-nominated portrayal of an icy, unyielding family gatekeeper in "Phantom Thread" sent shivers down your spine, "Mum" is the antidote. In the U.K. sitcom, Manville plays the polar opposite of her film role, a gentle soul with never a harsh word to say. All that achievement and Manville is as warm as Cathy, her character in "Mum" (which debuts its second season on streaming service BritBox, on May 13, Mother's Day), though the English actress insists she's not a match for Cathy's "miraculous" tolerance.Manville empathizes with Cathy's new challenge of single motherhood. It's not, Manville said, crediting the impression to how "brilliantly" her fellow actors perform and to the work of series creator Stefan Golaszewski.
