Activists are lobbying for further awareness and control of the meat industry after Lebanon was rocked by repeated cases of shops selling expired meat, despite claims of specialists that the issue has been exaggerated.Despite the organization's calls for stiffer regulation, Paul Ariss, president of the Restaurant Owner's Syndicate in Lebanon, said the issue of expired meat had no effect on restaurants and that the threat was exaggerated."We [restaurant owners] are not concerned about this issue," he told The Daily Star, stressing that the media had played a large role in frightening the public. He also said the number of food poisoning incidents as a result of expired meat was still low, with no recent cases reported. Ariss explained that restaurants were not buying meat in large quantities as they had done before, but just enough to serve for one day, or two at most.If the smell of the meat is rancid or sour, then it is not fresh.
