The Vatican is preparing to revive consultations in a bid to break Lebanon's one-year presidential deadlock, diplomatic sources in Beirut told The Daily Star.Supporting a specific presidential candidate by the Vatican risked alienating a significant chunk of Christians, the sources said.First, that in doing so the Vatican will necessarily stand opposed to some segments of the Christians, and this is not within the politics of the Holy See.Second, many Christian figures who oppose Aoun consider themselves to be the suitable presidential candidates. The Vatican is interested in maintaining the "international umbrella" it created to protect Lebanon, the sources said. The Vatican is currently interested in preserving this "international umbrella" through helping to elect a president, without imposing a candidate on a segment of Christians.Reports that ties are frozen between the Vatican and some Christian leaders are not true, the sources said, adding that the Vatican clearly maintains relationships with all Christian leaders, including Aoun.
