A meeting last week between Machnouk and Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun, who staunchly opposes the extension of the terms of the Army and ISF commanders, failed to make any breakthrough on the issue of security appointments.Sources familiar with the security appointment contacts said Machnouk would follow a legal course by proposing to the Cabinet the names of three senior officers for the post of ISF chief, in addition to the names of other candidates for the posts of the gendarmerie command and the ISF Command Council.Aoun, according to the sources, has rejected Machnouk's proposal to separate the appointments in the ISF and Army commands, especially since Basbous' term expires on June 5, while Army commander Gen. Jean Kahwagi retires on Sept. 23 .
