Lebanese activist Ahmad Amhaz was released on bail Thursday following nine days in jail for a controversial Facebook post in February that slammed Lebanese political leaders. The decision to release the activist was made by Baabda Investigative Judge Pierre Francis after Amhaz's family and lawyer posted the LL500,000 ($300) bail payment.Amhaz had been held in jail since March 21, after police received a tip about his social media post.However, Amhaz still faces a trial and could be sentenced to two years imprisonment for the post, in which he appeared to criticize Aoun, Hariri and Speaker Nabih Berri.Lama Fakih, deputy director of Human Rights Watch's Middle East and North Africa division, agreed.Lebanon's extensive libel and defamation laws could have a chilling effect on freedom of speech, she said.
